A Sonnet of Sonnets, by John Lewis Smith
Sonnet #10: Postgrad Angst
Postgrad and lost in mist on Kinder Scout
The MRC at Sheffield, Mushroom Lane.
Divorced and free to fall in love and out
Again to Joni Mitchell’s Blue refrain.
I start to teach, at O.U. summer school,
And run an adult evening class as well.
I party hard and sometimes play the fool
Adrift, I’m spinning like a carousel.
Research, computer programming, and stats
Philosophy, and the linguistic turn.
My brushed red denim suit is where it’s at,
Experimental method has to burn.
In academic life it’s plain to see
The rite of passage is the Ph.D.
